Other assistance
Credit and debt hotline
If you have unpaid bills and a debt collector (sometimes called a “mercantile agent”) contacts you, call the Credit & Debt Hotline on 1800 808 488 for free advice or call EWON.
For more information visit www.cclcnsw.org.au see our article on debit and credit reporting.
Community welfare agencies
Community welfare agencies in your area may be able
to help you in the form of food, clothing, furniture, Telstra
vouchers and other assistance. Some agencies may also provide energy
vouchers and water vouchers.
Many of these agencies may contact
the supplier on your behalf if you are unable to make reasonable
payment arrangements with your electricity,
gas or water
supplier.

Financial counselling
Certain community agencies have qualified financial counsellors
to help you manage your finances. The services of a financial
counsellor are free. For further information about financial
counselling, or to find an accredited financial counsellor
in your area, visit the Financial
Counsellors' Association of NSW.
No Interest Loan Schemes
The No Interest Loan Schemes (NILS) program helps people on low-income by providing interest free loans for items such as new, energy efficient appliances.
NILS is available through some community organisations. Contact community organisations in your local area to see if they offer NILS. For more information phone (02) 4754 4050 or visit www.nilsnsw.org.au

Help for tenants
Tenants may need to deal with their landlord about an electricity,
gas or water supply issue. Tenants have different rights
and responsibilities in relation to water
accounts, electrical or plumbing repairs, and meter
access.
For further information download our Advice
for tenants fact sheet, or contact your local Tenants'
Advice and Advocacy Service for free advice and assistance.
Legal advice
If you need legal advice, Community Legal Centres (CLCs)
may be able to help you. CLCs are independent, non-profit
community organisations providing free legal advice, information
and referrals for individuals and communities across New
South Wales.
Some centres provide legal advice over the phone, and hold
interview and advice sessions after business hours. For
further information and contact details of a centre near
you, visit the Combined
Community Legal Centres NSW website.
