- Choosing a retailer: In NSW you can buy your electricity from the Standard Electricity Retailer for your area, or take up negotiated contract with a licensed retailer. Note that a retailer doesn't have to offer you a contract or they may not retail in your area.
- Standard Electricity Retailers: All retailers must have a standing offer which gives domestic and small retail customers the automatic right to supply. If you don't enter into a negotiated contract, you can opt for a standing offer from any retailer operating in your area. The prices for these offers are not regulated, and may be higher than more competitive discounted tariffs offered with market contracts. Standing offer rates are available on retailer websites.
- Electricity distributors: Distributors are responsible for reading your meter and maintaining network assets. There are three distributors in NSW with designated network areas: Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy and Essential Energy.
The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) oversees the licensing, pricing and compliance of electricity suppliers in NSW.
