Changes to the Cheaper Home Batteries Program

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program began on 1 July 2025 and is an Australian Government initiative designed to make home batteries more affordable. Through an upfront discount, the program helps households store their solar energy and reduce electricity bills.

From 1 May 2026, the program was updated to better meet household needs over the long term.

Under the changes, smaller batteries continue to receive the full discount, while larger batteries receive a lower discount as their size increases. The rebate will also reduce more frequently over time to reflect falling battery prices and help ensure the program remains sustainable.

What this means for you:

  • The discount you receive depends on your battery size and whether your system is installed before or after 1 May 2026.

  • Your quote and contract should clearly show the discount you qualify for.

  • Retailers and installers must be clear and upfront about pricing, discounts and installation timeframes.

  • Installers are expected to only promise what they can deliver, manage battery availability with suppliers, and install no more than two battery systems per day.

  • The Clean Energy Regulator continues to carry out inspections and can take compliance action to protect customers.

Before you sign, make sure you understand:

  • how much discount you will receive

  • when your system will be installed

  • exactly what is included in your contract
