Electricity metering competition: who benefits?
- Setting electricity tariffs
Setting electricity tariffs
MSPs now play a crucial role setting/configuring electricity tariffs. The electricity network tariff assigned to a customer’s meter determines the energy offers available on the retail market. MSPs configure a customer’s meter to the correct network tariff based on the electricity network’s tariff assignment policy. They also ensure the correct tariff is updated on the national Market Settlement and Transfer Solutions (MSATS) database, so the customer is billed correctly and can shop around for better energy offers.
Problems with an electricity meter’s tariff configuration may be the underlying factor for complaints about:
-
High bill disputes: ie how electricity consumption charges have been calculated on a bill and whether the tariffs are correctly configured at the electricity meter.
-
Controlled load services (ie hot water service): including complaints that the controlled load service is configured to the wrong register on the electricity meter, or simply that the customer is running out of hot water.
-
Solar credits: for example, the solar credits, or ‘feed-in tariff’ is not appearing on their bills. This can commonly be traced back to the tariff configuration at the electricity meter.
